Ministry websites can be fancy. Complex. Colorful. Flash-enabled. And spendy!
For just a few dollars a year, you or your ministry will have a great website, with perks.

Just follow these easy steps
1. Rent a domain name from www.namecheap.com
This is the *almost* free part of free. It costs less than–hold your breath–$10 a year. A year!
If you don’t rent a name, your address will be something like webhost.myministry.com. A domain name is the address of your website, such as myministry.org. Make it easy for people to find you. Rent a domain name.

2. Post your site at www.Wordpress.com
Wordpress is a great place for a website. It was originally made for blogs, sites where you post new articles all the time. But WordPress works great for ministries because:

Their Help area will explain how to do almost anything

They offer static pages–pages that don’t change. You can make one your home page, another your “About Us” page, etc.

The blog features make it easy to add up-to-date announcements and events.

3. Connect your domain name to your website.
This is a one-time procedure.
At WordPress, your site is called myministry.wordpress.com. Double-check the name. Go back to namecheap.com. Login, and add a CNAME entry, with this WordPress address.
Now, when someone types in myministry.org, they’ll be taken to your website at WordPress.

3.1. Optional: map your WordPress site (blog) to your domain name.
Once visitors arrive at your site, guess what they see? myministry.wordpress.com. Mapping your domain name to your WordPress site fixes that.

Again, be prepared to shell out some cash–a few bucks a year. This money goes to WordPress.

Now, when people visit your site, they’ll see myministry.org.

4. Get free mail at Google Apps
Where is your ministry’s email address? Is it me@internetprovider.com? With Google Apps, at http://www.google.com/apps/, your email address will be me@myministry.org — for free!
Google Apps also offers a calendar, so you can keep everyone up to date.

There you are–a very low cost, usable website and email to match. Now, tell all your friends about your new site!

Get it at http://www.theword.gr/

Pros:
Multiple bible views, turn sync on/off on each one
Search words color-coded in results
History of each search, Bible, and book
Create user commentary, dictionary, topic books
Pop-up help on each button
Install to USB key and run on ANY Windows PC

Cons:
Search one Bible at a time
Help docs online (program works off-line)
Only runs in Windows

Evaluation tools:

Features: http://www.theword.gr/index.php?article.features&l=english
Screenshots: http://www.theword.gr/index.php?screenshots&l=english

For me, a major concern was the number and kind of Bibles available. Check out the list at:
http://www.theword.gr/index.php?downloads.modules&l=english

Portability:
The Word runs so smoothly off the USB thumb drive. Now, whatever notes I put in, I know I have them with me.

Searching:
First thing I appreciated right away: Search for multiple words, they show up in the results color-coded. The first word you searched is one color, the second word is another, and so on. Sometimes I get a lot of results; the colors help me scan them quickly for word clusters.
The bottom of the search window says “Is this what you are looking for?” I can verify my search before I search.
Of course, the search lets you use AND, OR, and yes, even XOR (one or the other, but not both).
It also includes NEARV (verses) and NEARW (words).
There are shortcuts for each search term (& for AND) if you use them a lot.
Quotes and parenthesis are supported
Bonus: Translated (TR or >). Find the English word which translates a certain Hebrew or Greek word, such as G1249 > servant (diakonos translated servant).

Word study:
The Word has both the Greek NT, at least two editions, and the Greek translation of the OT. They both come with Strong’s dictionary links, and morphology links. The Word is the only free software I found that gives the definition when I hover over the morphology link. Bonus!

Look:
The Word is the most visually versatile Bible program (for free) that I have found.
It comes with over 20 themes (color styles) ready to go.
You can turn on/off any tool bar. Drag the toolbars at the top to rearrange them.
The little windows inside The Word are called views. You can open as many views as you want.
When a dictionary or cross-reference book matches the Bible, its name lights up. You know right away there’s something useful there.
The Word delivers features I expected to find only in a paid package. It’s full of user-friendly features, and a nice interface. That’s important for this preacher who does most of his Bible study on the PC.

Pros:
Users can subscribe to your sermons like a podcast
Users can approve your message with an “Amen.”
Totally free, no outside ads

Cons:
Only the inconvenience of the three-step process of posting a sermon. Honestly, much easier than doing it myself.

Sermon Cloud hosts, for free, sermons and other files for churches and ministries.

I tried to post sermon MP3s on my own. What a pain. Then I found SermonCloud.
This is so much easier. They even let users subscribe.
Our church has their own page at SermonCloud, with all the sermons listed.
It was easy to add the updated list of sermons on our church web page with an RSS link.

ALT+TAB
In Vista: Windows+TAB

You have multiple windows open. How do you switch?

Hold down the ALT key

Tap the TAB key. (The key may just have the symbols <— and —>)

Is the window you want highlighted? Don’t release the ALT key until it is!
Tap TAB again until the window you want is highlighted.
If you get to the end of the list, tap TAB again! You’re back to the first window.

When the window you want is highlighted, release ALT.

Note: Windows are listed in the order you used them, most recent to least recent.
This is a big help. Let’s say you have five windows open. You were typing in the word processor, then you opened your Internet browser to copy something. When you ALT+TAB, the word processor comes up first.

In Windows Vista, this works the same. For more fun, replace the ALT key with the Windows key (wavy window symbol, left of space bar). Hold that key down and press TAB. Same idea, but you see all the windows in a 3-d format. Cool.
